On Race Relations at UVA

Updated: Apr 6, 2020

The University of Virginia has been in some hot water in regards to racial segregation issues. You might have heard of the KKK members that stormed the streets a few years back. This was in the back of my head as I prepared for my first year in my new University. But the racial tension did not stop there.

Microagressions continue to plague the black community at our University. The implicit biases of the surrounding population create for a community that is on edge often with short fuses where I comes to racial inequality. As of the year 2020 one of our own students made national waves for speaking out about a high density of white people in the multicultural space that opened up. While the announcement was met with unparalleled support by the black community on campus. The white community and administration had other ideas about it. Overall the situation was handled quietly but it was the first drop in the bucket for racial divides coming to light.
